Who Can Join?
There are no age limits. Our Team currently has skaters ages 5*83. As long as you possess basic skating skills, crossing over on skates (inline or quad) and stopping, we will work you into our program! Perhaps thinking, “I’m too old to start a new sport or to compete on a team”. You’ll find many older adults skating,, just to keep in shape, and a large number competing at speed meets.
In order to join the speed team a skater must be able to perform basic skating techniques such as forward skating, stopping and cross-overs. If you do not have your own skates you may rent them, or talk to the coaches about what you should purchase. We have access to a wide variety of used and new inline/quad skates and would be glad to help you get the correct fit.
A person does not have to be fast in order to join. We’ll help you get fast! Speed skating is an exciting and challenging sport. It takes a lot of patience, determination and HARD WORK to be good at speed skating. I think you will find the extra effort is worth it!
Capital City Racing team members have the opportunity to compete at Local, State, National and International events. Maybe you’re not sure you want to compete yet, that’s okay! Maybe you just want to be involved in something disciplined to help you lose weight or to get in shape. We have a structured, disciplined training and competitive schedule planned for this year designed to accommodate all levels of skating ability from beginner to advanced!
Derby Girls, you are welcome to. Speed practice will give you a competitive edge and help you with speed drills you can take back to Derby practice.
Speed Team members will have the opportunity to skate with skaters of equal ability, and National Champions, in both indoor and outdoor settings. Capital City Racing Coach Denise Kerr has years of experience in competitive speed skating. Denise holds several National titles and records in both inline, and quad speed skating. She is experienced with coaching skaters of all ages and skill levels, and has produced several Regional and National Champions and 1 JR World Team Member in the last 15 years coaching the Capital City Team.
Capital City Racing holds practice both indoor at Skateland South and outdoor at Washington Park , Scheels and our Meijers Loop. The team competes in the Midwest Points Series each year as well as other Invitational events located outside our immediate area. Team members have also competed in France at the Trophee Des 3 Pistes. Skaters may skate as few or as many competitive events as they desire, we do not force our skaters to compete.
Information on upcoming events and meetings, as well as practice schedule changes will be made available during practice as well as being posted here and on Facebook.
